Turkey

Turkey is a transcontinental country that straddles both Europe and Asia, offering a unique blend of Eastern and Western influences. Rich in history, Turkey is home to ancient cities, cultural landmarks, and diverse landscapes ranging from stunning coastlines to rugged mountains. Its strategic location has made it a crossroads of civilizations, contributing to its vibrant cultural heritage. From the bustling streets of Istanbul to the fairy-tale landscapes of Cappadocia, Turkey is a country of contrasts and beauty, making it a fascinating place to explore. I am super excited to learn more about Turkey's geography and see all its natural geological aspects going to be a great semester of exploring a new country!

Hazards, disasters, and catastrophes are different in scale and impact.

  • A hazard is a situation that could cause harm but is unlikely to do so.
  • A disaster is a sudden event that causes significant damage to people and the environment.
  • A catastrophe is an extreme form of disaster, causing widespread destruction to entire communities and societies.

Week 2

Map of Earth's tectonic plates

This week we will be discussing Tectonic plates and the importance of knowing the plate boundaries, and how they relate to some natural hazards, like volcanoes or earthquakes.

One of the world's most active transform fault systems, the Anatolian Fault System is located in Turkey. The Anatolian Fault indicates the divide of the Eurasian plate from the Anatolian plate. A significant part of this system, the North Anatolian Fault (NAF), has caused some of the most catastrophic earthquakes in recorded history, most notably the disastrous İzmit earthquake in 1999. This fault connects to the East Anatolian Fault, another important fault line in the area, as it runs from the Aegean Sea to the eastern portion of Turkey. While the NAF moves in a right-lateral direction, the East Anatolian Fault, which runs alongside Lake Hazar, moves in a left-lateral direction. Turkey is extremely vulnerable to seismic activity because of its distinct tectonic position, with movement along these faults occurring at a rate of about 20–30 millimeters per year, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) (USGS, 2023; AFAD, 2023).

Type of boundary

We are talking about the transform boundary which our books tell us is when
two tectonic plates slide past each other horizontally.

  1. Week2: Good tectonic reflection. *In the future please create a new post each week, and don't edit your first one. It is difficult to find the information. Thanks!
